Massage Therapy

Massage therapy has been used for millennia across all different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. It is a safe and effective way to relieve aches and pains, promote healing of injuries and provide stress relief. Through the use of appropriate massage strokes, muscle knots can be reduced to create a healthier musculature that is free of unnecessary tension.

Thousands of Albertans visit a massage therapist each year for relief of a wide variety of injuries and disorders. Massage therapy can be a great way to reduce increased muscle tension and accompanied headaches, improve blood and lymph circulation, enhance sleep by calming the nervous system, and treat numerous musculoskeletal ailments and disorders.

How Does Massage Therapy Work?

Often when we get injured there will be an inflammatory response that occurs in the region of the injury. This inflammatory response leads to muscle tightness, often in the form of a spasm, a decrease in blood flow to the area, and pain. In essence a vicious circle of pain, spasm, and ischemia (lack of blood flow) stagnates the healing of the injury. Massage therapy works to break the pain, spasm, ischemia cycle by increasing blood flow to the area in order to relax muscles in the area and thus decrease pain. Increased blood flow helps speed up recovery by providing necessary nutrients for healing.

Another wonderful benefit of massage therapy, specifically a relaxation treatment, is that it helps combat generalized elevated body tension by calming the nervous system. As a consequence, stress related hormones like cortisol and their detrimental effects on tissue are minimized.

What to Expect for Your Visit:

Upon arriving at the Centre for Soft Tissue Pain, our friendly staff will present you with a case history to fill out. This will allow the massage therapist to understand your condition and to create a treatment plan that will best address your concerns. Your therapist will then do a further verbal and/or physical assessment of the injury if necessary before beginning the treatment.

If you primarily are at the Centre for Soft Tissue Pain to reduce general tension through relaxation massage, only pertinent information regarding possible contraindications will be asked, otherwise you will begin your treatment soon after your case history has been completed.

Your therapist will leave the room while you remove clothing, lie on the massage table and cover yourself with a top flannel sheet. Since it is important that you feel comfortable during the massage, only remove what you feel comfortable removing.

Massage therapists are required to cover and drape you with a top sheet and will expose only the area being treated. You do not need to expose an area that makes you uncomfortable. This allows the massage therapist to work the musculature thoroughly while allowing you to relax and enjoy the treatment. The therapist will knock before coming in the room and the massage will begin shortly thereafter.

You can trust your massage therapist at the Centre for Soft Tissue Pain as only experienced and fully licensed therapists are part of the team. You will get the best possible care in a safe and caring therapeutic environment.
